wdgwars Explained — Wardriving Competitions and What You Need to Compete

wdgwars is a wardriving competition where participants race to discover the most Wi-Fi networks. Here's how it works, what hardware you need, and how to submit your logs.

Wardriving competitions have been around for decades, but wdgwars brings a modern, structured format to the hobby. If you've been logging networks with WiGLE and want to turn your drives into a competitive sport, wdgwars is where to start.

What is wdgwars?

wdgwars is a wardriving competition platform. Participants scan Wi-Fi networks during a competition window, log the data with GPS coordinates, and submit their results. Scores are based on the number of unique networks discovered — networks not previously logged by that participant.

Competitions typically run on a weekly or monthly cycle. Rankings are public and updated as submissions come in.

How scoring works

Your score is based on unique BSSID discoveries within the competition window. A BSSID is the hardware address of a specific access point — each router has one. Finding the same network twice doesn't add to your score.

This rewards:

  • Covering new geographic areas
  • Driving routes others haven't driven
  • Using hardware that can detect more networks per area scanned

What hardware do wardrivers use for wdgwars?

Serious competitors use dedicated wardriving hardware rather than phones. Dedicated hardware offers:

  • Always-on scanning without battery drain concerns
  • External antennas for better range
  • Direct SD card logging in WiGLE-compatible format
  • GPS integration for accurate location tagging

The SigBin Labs BW20-07s WarDriver is built specifically for this use case — GPS-tagged Wi-Fi scanning, SD card logging, and output compatible with both WiGLE and wdgwars submission formats.

How to submit to wdgwars

1. Complete your wardrive session with your hardware or phone app

2. Export or copy the log file from your device or SD card

3. Log in to the wdgwars platform: https://wdgwars.pl/home

4. Upload your log file before the competition deadline

5. Your score is calculated automatically from unique BSSID discoveries

Tips for a competitive wdgwars run

  • Plan your route in advance — aim for areas with dense housing or commercial zones
  • Drive early in the competition window — some unique BSSIDs may be logged by others later
  • Use dual-band hardware to capture both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks
  • Log continuously — even low-density areas contribute unique discoveries
  • Submit multiple times during the window if rules allow

Is this legal?

Yes, when done passively. Wardriving involves scanning for publicly broadcast Wi-Fi signals without connecting to any network. This is legal in most jurisdictions. Users are responsible for understanding and complying with local laws.
